Summer Bakes

Updated: Sep 27, 2023

The high street, supermarket bakeries and artisan bakers are all celebrating the summer. Today we take a look at their summer ranges and ask if your have chosen to launch summer bakes for your customers to enjoy.

Sainsbury's have launched a savoury and sweet selection of summer bakes which embrace a fun and zesty summer spirit. Doesn't this Tropical Tart, part of Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference range, look delicious!

The Sainsbury's team have been inspired by bold tropical flavours, as well as ice cream and fruit. And, our favourite savoury pick is their new share 'n' tear bread. Is ice cream inspired bakes a trend you have already identified?

We must also share Sainsbury's Mini Ice Cream Inspired Cupcakes, the nine-pack of mini cupcakes are each topped with vanilla and strawberry frosting and finished with colourful sprinkles and a classic sundae sauce.

British Baker recently reported that Costa Coffee has become the latest operator to unveil its range for summer 2022. We particularly enjoy Costa's summer Flamingo shaped biscuits which maximise on the current flamingo trend which extends from homeware and wallcoverings all the way into baking. As an established trend, have you introduced shaped biscuits into your range?

Costa has also a new Mac ‘N’ Cheese Sourdough Toastie to their menu alongside existing M&S food including the BLT Sandwich which is an extension of their M&S partnership which began earlier this year.

Asda has recognised the same ice cream trend we have seen from Sainsbury's and has unveiled a range of summer savoury items suitable for picnics and barbecues. We can't wait to try their Neapolitan Celebration Cake which takes cues from the classic ice cream. This cake has madeira, chocolate and strawberry sponge layers covered in complementary flavoured frosting. It’s topped with sprinkles, a cone decoration and chocolate frosting to look like a melted ice cream.

“This is a year of celebrations with the upcoming Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, with traditional and nostalgic flavours taking centre stage,” said Jonathan Moore, senior director of food innovation and trends at Asda. “We have gone all out with our showstopping cakes, perfect for street parties and celebrations.”

We love the playfulness of Asda's Mini Coronation Chicken Pastry Crowns which were launched in honour of the upcoming Platinum Jubilee. They’re made with British chicken in a coronation sauce with apricot and sultanas all wrapped in puff pastry with a turmeric sprinkle.

And, the Wensleydale Quiche, inspired by the British summer and, as such, is packed full of garden vegetables with a butter enriched carrot pastry and cheese & chive topping, also caught our eye.
